2022 Annual Report: Letter From the Director

Apr 18, 2022Appeal

Dear Friend,

This is a year of hope.

At AlphaCare, we’ve been through a lot of change over the past year. Sometimes these transitions have been joyous, and sometimes they have been painful. We have celebrated together and struggled together—praised God for His provision in times of abundance and sought His mercy through seasons of need. But through every change, God has been faithful to us. AlphaCare is God’s ministry and our work is in His hands. This is why I look with hope toward the coming year. As we continue to work through some challenging transitions, I am trusting in Christ to guide us with wisdom and resolve.

I want to highlight a few of the transitions God has carried us through this past year.

Welcoming Motherhood

Last year, I became a mom! In January of 2021, I welcomed Jolene (bottom left) into the world and began the beautiful journey of motherhood. Throughout the past few years, I have experienced the struggles and the joys of pregnancy, childbirth and motherhood alongside so many AlphaCare clients. Becoming a mother has deepened my empathy for the women we serve—I have felt some of their fear, uncertainty and confusion, and I have experienced the unspeakable love that waits for them the moment they finally hold the new life they have been carrying. I am more grateful than ever for the ministry of AlphaCare.

Brianna Cross, our Social Services Manager, also gave birth last year. She delivered a healthy and happy baby girl, Alaska (right), in June.

While our births were blessings that were welcomed by the AlphaCare community, it is fair to acknowledge that our maternity leaves put a strain on the team. As such a small ministry, the absence of two people was deeply felt. Our time away left extra work (and stress!) for our faithful colleagues. Around this time, life transitions led to the departure of our two part-time Development staff. By God’s grace, through the hard work of everyone on our staff and your support, we were able to persevere despite the challenges of this transition.

Will you join in God’s work at AlphaCare to empower pregnant women to choose life?

Saying Goodbye to Kim

As you may know, our longtime Program Director Kim Bennett left AlphaCare last year to focus on what matters most: her family. She had faithfully served our ministry for 36 years. We cannot overstate how valuable her talent, leadership, experience and determination have been throughout her tenure. It was, therefore, a challenge losing her presence on the staff. As with our maternity leaves, AlphaCare staff stepped up and worked very diligently; Sue Henderson served gracefully as Interim Program Director through this transitional period. Kim’s legacy lives on through the impact she has made on AlphaCare’s ministry.

Staff Shortages and New Responsibilities

One of the blessings that came out of our staffing shortages was the opportunity to promote two valuable staff members to leadership positions on the AlphaCare team.

Sue Henderson was promoted to Medical Services Manager in recognition of her compassion, dedication and leadership while serving on the Medical Services team as our Perinatal Nurse. Brianna was promoted to Social Services Manager during this time, in honor of all the hard work she has done leading the Social Services team through tough transitions as our Social Worker.

Last year, our Client Advocate Karissa Forino also reduced her hours to complete her field placement in continued pursuit of her Master of Social Work at Campbellsville University. Already, the reach of Karissa’s new skills and knowledge are blessing AlphaCare as they span diverse areas from client care to AlphaCare’s Strategic Plan progress. In May, Karissa will resume full-time hours following the completion of her degree. We’re excited about the ways in which AlphaCare will grow through Karissa’s pursuit of higher education and her ability to take on new responsibilities upon graduation.

Speaking of new responsibilities, we continue to seek a full-time nurse to lead the AlphaCare medical team. We are also seeking a Stewardship Officer to network and build relationships with our partners. Please pray with us that God will soon bring the people He would have to fill these important positions.

You can make a difference for pregnant women in need of medical and social services.

God’s Faithfulness So Far

Despite these difficult transitions, last year was a year of blessing and abundance. We closed out the year with a $23,000 surplus, thanks largely to a generous matching gift from faithful friends of AlphaCare. We have resumed most in-office appointments and continue to serve some families virtually.

We added members to our Board, Finance Committee and Governance Committee, and we look forward to the wisdom and guidance they will provide. We started a new client Bible study, with Christian women volunteering to lead. We answered more abortion calls than ever before, and we are deepening our training to better meet the holistic needs of every mother who reaches out to us. I am hopeful that God’s favor will continue this year. We have already had the honor of welcoming two new part-time Perinatal Nurses, AnnMarie Myers and Valerie Tuck. Their service will be invaluable as we reach more moms in need through the Mobile Medical Unit. We are exploring more opportunities to expand and grow this year.

We need you!

Thank you for all you do to support our ministry. Your generosity, compassion, prayers and partnership mean more to us than you will ever know. You are truly making a difference in the lives of people you may never meet. May God bless you for that faithfulness. We are so thankful for the “army” of supporters that has risen up to walk alongside us as we battle the realities of death on a daily basis.

Will you make a commitment to partner with AlphaCare’s ministry to save lives?

Blessings,
