From Dread to Joy: Finding Hope
Helen, our Administrative Assistant, answered the phone and encountered a voice filled with desperation and panic. Julia did not give any details, but she needed an ultrasound and she needed it right away. Thanks to the flexibility provided through our Mobile Medical Unit, our staff was able to schedule her for an appointment within the hour.
When Julia arrived at the MMU for her appointment, she explained that she had just visited her local clinic because she had been ill. It was at this clinic that the doctor shared with her the unexpected news that she was pregnant. Julia was in a panicked state, with many questions that she wanted answered- feeling ashamed and unprepared to parent. Above all, she was sure she wanted an abortion.
Throughout the appointment the AlphaCare nurse and client advocate were able to answer her questions, calm her fears and offer support. She had an ultrasound and by the time the nurse was just about finished a calm came over Julia. Her panic had been replaced with peace and a confidence that, with some help, she could parent this baby. She stepped off the MMU smiling and excited to go share the news with her family. What was dreaded and impossible became joyful and anticipated. Praise God!
