Steady & Reliable: Caring for Mom and Baby
This wasn’t the first time Kayla had walked into our office. She had been here before, though it all looked quite different now.
As an AlphaCare social worker sat with Kayla and listened to her story, it was clear that Kayla needed some support. She was already receiving prenatal care, so didn’t need our pregnancy test or ultrasound services. Instead, she came for help to get connected with resources to sustain her through her pregnancy and provide for her baby girl, who would arrive in a few short months.
Kayla was a single mom and her own family had stopped caring for her long ago. It was up to her alone, on her small salary, to start collecting things like a crib, car seat and clothes for baby. As our staff was helping Kayla with items like maternity clothes and some baby things, Kayla seemed to freeze. “I know that voice,” she said. She opened the office door and caught one of our nurses walking past. They both hugged and exclaimed their surprise. You see, Kayla had come to AlphaCare when she was expecting her first born, 8 years ago. AlphaCare had walked with her through her first pregnancy, so she knew just where to turn when she found out she was pregnant again.
Kayla knew AlphaCare was a safe place that offered her hope and help-a calming presence and steady, reliable support that she needed so desperately. You could see in her face as she spoke that the AlphaCare staff had invested in her, not just her choice to keep her baby. Her time spent at AlphaCare wasn’t and isn’t just about saving the baby, but it’s about providing care for both mom and baby… for the long haul.
