This Changes Everything

“I’m old!” Paula blurted out.

When she arrived for her appointment, Paula joked with our staff about her age and shared that she already had 3 children ranging in ages from 20-6 years old. She wasn’t sure if she would continue the pregnancy, but wanted to confirm via ultrasound before making a decision. One thing was for sure, the father of the baby was elated. While he wasn’t able to be physically present, he anxiously waited on the other end of the phone throughout the entirety of the appointment. Paula also had support from a friend who came along with her, and who Paula requested be with her from the start of the appointment. She was feeling nervous, and for good reason.

Paula’s last pregnancy had complications, including preeclampsia. Her doctor warned her that she could experience further complications should she get pregnant again. Paula admitted she had not been taking preventative measures against pregnancy. Our nurse, Ann Marie, took the opportunity to talk with Paula about fertility, preeclampsia, and more.

Then they moved on to the ultrasound. Paula was shocked when the screen showed not one, but two babies! As the shock wore off, she started naming multiple relatives who were twins. At the completion of the ultrasound, Ann Marie asked if it helped her make a decision about her pregnancy.

“I’m still unsure…but this changes everything. This is a good thing. I’m happy.”
